Guatemala, julio-agosto 2017
Walking round the shore of Chicabal, a sacred volcanic lake in the western highlands of Guatemala, we stop at a distance from a group of Maya Mam women in ceremony, placing offerings of flowers in the water. The sound of the women’s prayers floats across the placid water, a song of beseeching and lamentation. We sit in the grass, eating sweet bread fragrant with anise, listening, until the descending tones of their voices are silent, and we hear only the lapping of water, calls of birds, the stray dogs in the underbrush. There are things that should not be recorded.
